On This Day: 2 April 1699

On this day in 1699, George Edwards made a statement for the Court in the case of Rolls v Bowrey. This case related to the sorry affair of the St. George.

Bowrey and his friend, Nathaniel Long, invested in the St George to undertake a trading voyage under Bowrey’s command. This was the only ocean voyage planned by Bowrey, his known previous experience was confined to the East Indies and the English Channel/North Sea.

Unfortunately, the ship turned out to be leaky and the voyage was abandoned at Portsmouth. From the correspondence, severe strain was put on the friends’ relationship. Worse still, it resulted in the court case to which today’s document related.

The full story of the St. George is complex and I still to unravel it but it is yet another misfortune in Bowrey’s life.
