Sometimes, it is a complete mystery why a document was ever part of Bowrey’s papers. Today’s is an early one.
In 1672, Thomas Bowrey had only been in India for three years. There are few documents this early in his life and I am unsure whether or not this is in his handwriting. The document is A Roll: of ye Officers & Souldiers undr ye Comand of ye Honble Gerld Aungier Governd: The list includes a large number of Portuguese.
Today, lists of names are valuable sources for family historians and an early list, such as this, a rare find but why did Bowrey retain it. It includes the ensign Stephen Aderton. Is this the same man who wrote a personal letter to Bowrey eight years later?
