On This Day: 3 May 1667

According to Samuel Pepys’s diary, on this day in 1667 news was received that a Dutch fleet of about twenty ships had arrived off the east coast of England hoping to intercept colliers carrying coal to London.

Had this been a few months early, we could be certain that Bowrey’s uncle John would have commanded one of the ships sent to protect the colliers. By this time, Uncle John had probably had to retire from the navy on health grounds. Perhaps he was at home telling his young nephew tales of the sea.
