On This Day: 1 June 1685

On this day in 1685, Bowrey moved house and took delivery of another ten bales of goods from his ship at Aceh.

The previous day he had been told that it was not acceptable for an Englishman to live at the house he had chosen. This house was already a compromise because there was nothing available where he would have chosen to live because no Christian merchant had ever lives above the English factory.

At least they had shown him a house in which he was permitted to live and, although Bowrey thought that it was not so satisfactory, he accepted it.
