On this day in 1695, Philadelphia Sherer wrote to Thomas Bowrey from Fort St. George replying to a letter he had sent from England via Captain Hatton. He had given her an account of his health and welfare. Bowrey had provided some assistance to Mrs Sherer’s mother and children.
Bowrey’s Papers allow us to construct a little of her life. She was originally known to Bowrey as Philadelphia Lesly the sister of his friend and business partner, Robert Masfen. At that time she was a widow with three children who Bowrey had shown some kindness. After their uncle’s death. the children were sent home to England to be cared for by Philadelphia’s mother. She had married Charles Sherer, a merchant and free merchant like Bowrey, a few years prior to today’s letter. Charles became a business associate of Bowrey’s in India.
This is just one example of the range and depth of Bowrey’s Papers and why they are such an important source for researchers.
