On this day in 1707, William Charlton was paid for looking after Thomas Bowrey’s Duck yacht for another year. The Duck was now fifteen years old but Bowrey continued to care for her.
Charlton’s very shaky signature shows why his bill was actually in Bowrey’s handwriting but this gives us an insight to Bowrey’s feelings for his little craft. He uses the phrase By looking after my yaut ye year 1706. In all, he spent £5/10/0 (the equivalent of about £850 today) most of was for the looking after the yacht which Bowrey was clearly still using because 15 shillings was for delivering the yacht.
Despite this, Charlton had to wait until this late in the year to be paid in full when the final £1/10/0 was paid.
